Treasure of Lima: Pirate Treasure or Later Legend?

The Treasure of Lima is often grouped with pirate treasure stories, especially tales about Cocos Island. The legend describes church and state wealth secretly removed from Lima during political unrest and then stolen by the crew entrusted with transporting it.

What is the Treasure of Lima story?

According to the legend, officials in Lima feared that valuable church objects and treasure would be seized during the wars of independence. The valuables were placed aboard a ship for safekeeping. The crew supposedly murdered their guards, stole the cargo and hid it on Cocos Island.

Were the thieves pirates?

Retellings often transform the crew into pirates after the mutiny and theft. Names, ship identities and dates vary between versions, which makes the story difficult to pin to one reliable historical event.
