Olivier Levasseur: The Pirate Behind the Cryptogram Legend

Olivier Levasseur, often called La Buse, was a real pirate whose career included one of the most spectacular captures of the early eighteenth century. His supposed deathbed cryptogram, however, belongs to a much less secure layer of legend.

Who was Olivier Levasseur?

Levasseur was a French pirate active in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean during the early eighteenth century. He became associated with other pirates operating from Madagascar and nearby waters.

What was his greatest prize?

Levasseur and his allies captured the Portuguese vessel Nossa Senhora do Cabo near Réunion in 1721. The ship carried valuable cargo and passengers, and the capture became one of the most celebrated pirate prizes of the era.

What is the cryptogram story?

A later legend says that before his execution Levasseur threw a coded message into the crowd and challenged people to find his treasure. The story has inspired generations of treasure hunters.

Is the cryptogram authentic?
